What is technology consulting?
In management consulting, technology consulting (or tech consulting for short) provides services that help businesses leverage modern technologies to enhance business performance, streamline operations, improve decision-making, and ensure scalability for long-term success.
Some of the services that technology consulting firms offer are cloud transformation, cyber security services, technology risks, Internet of Things (IoT), software, etc.
What is media consulting?
Media consulting firms help businesses achieve their marketing and communications goals, i.e. increase the brand awareness and promote the brand image through media communications.
Media consultants help clients to create effective, cost-effective media strategies and campaigns. They also ensure that the objectives are realistic and backed by actionable plans.
What is telecommunications consulting?
Telecommunications consulting (or telecom consulting for short) provides businesses with services on the hardware and software components of telecom systems.
Telecom consultants work with clients to determine their telecom needs, assess their current infrastructure, recommend suitable solutions, and offer ongoing technical support. They can design, install, maintain or optimize the telecom systems.
Tech, Media and Telecom as one sector - TMT
Technology, Media, and Telecommunications (TMT) is not just a collection of three separate sectors. It is a field that forms the backbone of the global digital economy. TMT companies build the infrastructure and devices that connect people, businesses, and nations.
TMT consulting firms combine expertise from all three sectors, helping clients manage their technology, media, and telecommunications assets and strategies effectively.
What is IT consulting?
In management consulting, IT consultants help clients on how they can utilize information technology to meet business goals and solve problems. Their support ranges from cybersecurity, digitization, to artificial intelligence. IT consulting is an expertise classification of management consulting.
You may get confused with IT consulting and technology consulting. IT consulting focuses on solving specific technical challenges, like system maintenance, cybersecurity, and IT support. Whereas, technology consulting takes a broader, strategic approach, helping businesses leverage technology for growth, innovation, and digital transformation.
Information technology is a broad term, so it is further broken down to 3 smaller areas of expertise: IT strategy, IT operations and IT architecture. Each area will have its corresponding IT consulting service.
-
IT strategy consulting helps companies lay out plans on how they should use information technology to meet business goals
-
IT operations consulting helps companies implement, manage, deliver and support IT services for the business needs of internal and external users
-
IT architecture consulting helps companies set up specifications, guidelines and principles to design IT solutions
In this article, we will focus more on and present ranking lists of IT strategy.

Something you should notice…
Don't rely solely on ranking lists
Although the ranking lists above were made by reputable teams with a wide range of data, they don’t always offer the best insights for deciding where you should work. These rankings are often based on the personal preferences of consultants, without a relative or contextual perspective. What one person sees as a strength, another might see as a weakness.
In that sense, the rankings can be quite subjective.
In addition, overall rankings often lacked nuances. They don’t reflect the specific factors that might matter most to you. That’s why it’s important to look beyond the list.
Key nuances to consider when choosing a workplace
Choosing a company to work for is not about finding the "best" one in general, but about finding the one that fits you best.
Here are some important factors to consider when making your decision:
-
Salary, bonuses and other benefits
-
Firm culture
-
Work - life balance
-
Firm's prestige
-
And more
These aspects will have a direct impact on your day-to-day experience, so think carefully about what matters most to you.
We'll be publishing blog posts that dive deeper into these factors for different consulting firms soon. Stay tuned!
Ask consultants for review
One of the most practical ways to identify if that firm is truly the right fit is to directly ask consultants for review. Experiences can vary between firms, and even between different offices of the same firm.
That’s why you should reach out to at least three consultants working in the specific offices you want to apply for. Their perspective will provide you with the most reliable and relevant information to help you make your decisions.
